A MIDDLEWICH man has raised more than £1100 by auctioning off his three-foot long, 16-year-old dreadlocks.

Adam Towers, 30, raised the money for Alzheimers Society, in memory of his late grandmother Phyllis Hough, by saying goodbye to his most distinguishable feature.

Dads and Lads Barber’s, run by Adam’s friend Mark Kirk in Wheelock Street, opened on Saturday night to allow friends, family and donors to watch and even help with the ‘Off With His Dreads’ event.

In fundraising, Adam had set up the ‘PremiHair League table’ whereby each of the 19 highest donations had the option of cutting off a lock, the longest being 37 inches.

Initially setting a target of £500, Adam has more than doubled this total with the amount raised standing at £1162 from more than 70 supporters on Monday morning.

Speaking after his first haircut since the age of 14, Adam said: “It was getting to the point where I was thinking of what to do it with my hair, and I wanted to raise money and see what could come of it.

“I chose the Alzheimers Society because my nan was affected by it, so I wanted to do as much as I possibly could.

“We had a good turnout, and the cut itself turned out much better than I expected! Mark has done an amazing job with it.

“I was absolutely terrified – it was the most uncomfortable I had been in a long time. It was something so abstract and out of the norm for me. I could have been traumatised by it, but the people there made it a lot easier.

“It was amazing because it was within about in the first four or five days that we hit the £500. We thought, if we could do this so quickly then we can just keep on pushing and that’s what we did.

“I was really overwhelmed by it; it just really took off and I got so much support. Thank you to the people who donated – I couldn’t have done it without them.”
